Jury rules ATC must pay farmer $107,173 due to power line

A Jefferson County Circuit Court jury says American Transmission Co. must pay town of Waterloo farmer David Geise $107,173 to cover losses to the value of his property as a result of construction of a high-power transmission line across his farm. Concluding a three-day trial, the jury deliberated for five hours before reaching its verdict.
ATC built a 17-mile, 138-kilovolt transmission line from the town of Waterloo to the city of Jefferson in a project approved by state regulators in July 2006 to meet increasing electricity demand. About two-thirds of a mile of the line runs across Geise’s farm, where he raises llamas.
Geise’s attorney, Frank Jablonski of Madison, said at least one more lawsuit is pending against ATC involving the Jefferson County transmission line.
Meanwhile, a group of land owners in Dane County has sued ATC related to construction of a high-voltage transmission line between the town of Christiana and the town of Beloit, in Rock County. The 35-mile, 345-kilovolt line, designed to offer local utilities more access to cheaper power, began operating in March.
